That is not advice to game Canva. It is advice to stop spending your scarce signal budget on sentences nobody reads until after the fit/no-fit call.

Why polish fails trust

Profiles are marketing that can time-travel.

Bloom and co-authors (NBER WP 35546) show professional employment records are “mutable accounts,” not fixed historical snapshots. Roughly one in five established U.S. LinkedIn users retroactively edit the title or description of a job they already left—Revelio Labs puts the same pattern at about 1 in 5, with a median edit 4.5 years after the job ended. Edits cluster before job switches. After ChatGPT, AI language starts appearing in past roles.

So a skim of a polished profile is not an audit trail. Writing quality used to be a weak signal of thoughtfulness. Generative polish weakens it further. What survives skepticism is harder to rewrite after the fact: timestamped practice, criteria, outcomes under constraint.

The industry still runs on inferred claims

Aptitude Research and HireVue (2025) found 72% of companies still rely on resumes or self-reported skills to identify talent. Only 12% feel effective at skill validation. Half name validating skills as a top frustration. Their useful vocabulary: inferred skills (resume, title, experience) versus validated ones (structured evaluations, simulations, assessments).

SHRM’s skills-first work lands on the buyer side of the same gap: about 85% of HR professionals say they would be more likely to treat a candidate as meeting job requirements if there were a reliable way to assess skills—even without a degree.
